The Story: Astronauts face numerous health dangers. Astronauts have showed loss of bone and muscle. While some have developed immune weakening or heart and liver problems. A recent research finds that energy-producing structures in cells might be at risk for nearly all of this.
NASA GENELAB scientists studied cells and tissues from mouse and human. They looked for a possible chemical fingerprint of space excursion. In this course they compared astronauts with those that were on Earth.
The data of GeneLab were studied for many types of cells and tissues. Proteins and RNA were looked by researchers in each sample. The researchers also looked for epigenetic changes to DNA. Those are chemical switch which can develop on the outer of genes These may wrongly turn the genes on or off, or affect in the correct functioning.
Harm to mitochondria may be a common factor in spaceflight health risks, the team now summed up,
, Michael Snyder- a systems biologist at Stanford University in California agreed- that discovering identical changes in so many space travelers indeed indicates to some general effect.
If mitochondria is the culprit, aiming them could help protect future space goers. Some diseases cause mitochondrial ailments. Medicines utilized to treat such diseases may reduce astronauts’ well being risks. Future studies could test if prevalent medicines avoids mitochondrial problems in cells, animals and human on long space missions.
